Chapter 345 - 343: Still Trying to Impress the Boss?
Bai Tingting turned her head.
A gigantic dog with gray-black fur was slowly coming up step by step.
It didn’t bark, but its entire body emitted a kind of terrifying wildness. Its eyes were fixed on Bai Tingting, and with each step it took, the air in the corridor grew colder.
"Whose dog is this anyway? Why isn’t it on a leash?"
Bai Tingting’s scream got stuck in her throat, turning into an irregular gasp.
The gray-black giant dog blocked the staircase entrance, pressing closer step by step. It didn’t bark, but the low, continuous growl from its throat was more hair-raising than any roar. Its ghostly green eyes, like two clusters of ghostly flames, locked onto her.
The elderly officer beside her was already weak-kneed with fear, supporting himself against the wall to avoid collapsing onto the ground.
"This... this dog..." Bai Tingting stammered in a trembling voice.
Before she could finish, a tall and upright figure appeared at the stairway corner. Wearing a deep green military uniform, polished leather shoes, and with an expression as cold as ice, Gu Yanshen came up. His body exuded a steely aura from the battlefield, freezing the air in the corridor.
He looked toward the poised wolfdog, his gaze then landing unwaveringly on the trembling Bai Tingting.
"Where is my partner?"
He didn’t even raise his voice, yet that sound struck Bai Tingting’s heart like an ice pick.
Bai Tingting’s lips quivered, but she couldn’t utter a word. Under that gaze, her body stiffened as if it would be pierced by a bullet the next second.
"I’ll ask one more time." Gu Yanshen stepped forward.
Little Grey cooperated by letting out a more threatening growl, its front paw scratching a faint mark on the floor.
"In... in the basement..." Bai Tingting finally broke down, her trembling hand pointing to the tightly closed wooden door at the end of the corridor.
"What’s going on!"
A loud and forceful shout came from downstairs. A middle-aged man wearing glasses and with meticulously combed hair quickly ascended the stairs, it was Director Chen who had just returned from a meeting in the city.
He arrived only to witness this alarming scene: a giant dog the size of a small calf, an intimidating military officer, and his niece who was about to faint from fright.
"Director Chen!" The old officer seemed to see a savior, crawling over in haste, "Mr. Bai, she... she locked Technician Lin in the basement!"
Director Chen’s face suddenly turned grim.
Lin Wan Yi! She was the talent personally recommended by Dean Li of Beijing Agricultural College, said to be capable of solving major issues. Part of his city meeting was about securing special research funding for her. He had just left, and his foolish niece had locked her up?
Director Chen’s gaze moved towards the military insignia on Gu Yanshen’s shoulder, breaking into a cold sweat.
Captain!
A young captain with further studies at National Defense University!
"The key!" Gu Yanshen said coldly.
Bai Tingting was terrified out of her wits, trembling as she fumbled a large bunch of keys from her pocket, dropping them with a clatter.
Gu Yanshen didn’t even spare her a glance, heading straight to the door, ready to kick it down.
"Wait!" Director Chen hurriedly picked up one of the brass keys and handed it over, "Mr. Gu, it’s all a misunderstanding!"
"Click."
The lock was opened.
The heavy wooden door pushed open inward, releasing a musty, moldy smell.
Everyone held their breath. Locked inside for over an hour, a delicate young woman, even if not crying in fear, would undoubtedly be covered in dust.
However, the figure that stepped out from behind the door left everyone stunned.
Lin Wan Yi’s beige wool coat was still neat, her hair only slightly tousled. Holding a manila envelope, she walked out calmly, even nonchalantly lifting her hand to dust away non-existent dirt from her sleeve.
Her gaze swept over the crowd at the doorway, finally landing on Gu Yanshen, her eyes slightly bending: "Why are you here?"
Her calm demeanor contrasted sharply with Bai Tingting’s pale, near collapse.
Gu Yanshen strode forward, gripping her hand, checking her from head to toe. Confirming she was unharmed, his daunting aura subsided slightly, though his expression remained grim.
"Bai Tingting!" Director Chen’s fury found its target, pointing at his niece, his hand shaking with anger, "You... you’re outrageous! Lawless! Apologize to Technician Lin and Mr. Gu immediately!"
"I... I’m sorry..." Bai Tingting forced out the words, tears and snot streaming down her face.
"Is a sorry enough?" Director Chen was both angry and disappointed, "Technician Lin is the expert our unit invited! Locking an expert in the basement, what does that say about us? If word gets out, what face does our department have left?"
Lin Wan Yi tugged at Gu Yanshen’s sleeve, signaling him not to speak. She looked at Director Chen, her tone calm: "Director, I’m fine. The old files in the basement are quite valuable, and I’ve managed to organize some of them."
She shook the envelope in her hand.
The more composed she was, the more guilty Director Chen felt. He knew this matter could be big or small, depending on how the other party chose to pursue it.
To appease Gu Yanshen’s anger and provide an explanation to Dean Li, Director Chen decisively issued an order, with a stern face: "Bai Tingting, your mistake today is grave, so you must make amends! The city places great importance on the wheat improvement project for the saline-alkali land in the suburb of Beijing. The meeting tomorrow morning will discuss it. You will work overtime tonight to produce a preliminary improvement plan! If you can’t write it, you explain it to your uncle!"
Write a plan?
Bai Tingting was utterly dumbfounded. She could barely recognize a few words, let alone write a technical plan—it was equivalent to killing her.
Her eyes frantically searched around and suddenly, she spotted a crumpled piece of paper next to the wastebasket by Lin Wan Yi’s desk.
It was filled with dense writing, its title was "On the Saline-Alkali Land in the Suburb of Beijing..."
Bai Tingting’s eyes lit up.
It must be Lin Wan Yi’s discarded draft!
While Director Chen was still lecturing and Gu Yanshen was deep in conversation with Lin Wan Yi, she moved furtively towards the desk, quickly snatched up the crumpled paper, clenched it in her palm, and stuffed it into her pocket.
She thought her actions were well concealed.
But Lin Wan Yi saw her little maneuver clearly. Lowering her eyelids, she hid the calmness flickering in her eyes.
That "discarded draft" was intentionally left there by her.
